Meghan Markle & Harry’s Oprah show to cost £5 MILLION – but Sussexes won’t get a penny

Meghan Markle interview: The View panelist shares thoughts

The two-hour-long Oprah interview cost US network CBS a license fee ranging in between £5.06million to £6.50million ($7m to £9m), according to people familiar with the deal. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first sit-down chat since Megxit will be first aired on Sunday at 8pm ET (Monday at 1am GMT), shortly after CBS’s popular news magazine 60 Minutes.

As part of the deal between CBS and Oprah’s production company, Harpo Productions, the US network can license the bombshell chat to international broadcasters, according to the Wall Street Journal.

In the UK, the interview will air on Monday evening on ITV, which is believed to have paid approximately £1million for the rights.

While licensing the interview has been a costly affair, Meghan and Harry were not paid to sit down with Oprah.

Page Six said: “A spokeswoman for the Oprah Winfrey Network confirmed that the couple won’t be collecting a pay cheque and said that no donations are being made to their charity.”

The interview was filmed in February and is set to touch upon a number of topics – including the Sussexes’ relationship with the palace and the Royal Family.

In a 30-second teaser released on Thursday, the Duchess of Sussex extraordinarily claimed the Royal Family may have acted towards damaging her and Prince Harry.

US journalist Oprah asked Meghan: “How do you feel about the palace hearing you speak your truth today?”

To which the Duchess of Sussex replied: “I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time we would still just be silent if there is an active role that The Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us.

“And if that comes with risk of losing things, I mean, I’ve…there’s a lot that’s been lost already.”

In another teaser released yesterday during CBS’s This Morning, Meghan said she finds it “liberating” to be able to make her own choices again after having followed the Royal Family’s rules for two years.

After Oprah recalled she had asked Meghan for an interview a few months before her nuptials with Prince Harry, the journalist asked: “What is right about this time?”

Meghan replied: “Well, so many things.

“That we are on the other side of a lot of… a lot of life experience that has happened.

“And also that we have the ability to make our own choices in a way that I couldn’t have said yes to you then.

“That wasn’t my choice to make.

“So, as an adult who lived a really independent life to then go into this construct that is…different than I think what people imagine it to be it’s really liberating to be able to have the right and privilege in some ways to be able to say yes, I mean, I’m ready to talk.”

Oprah chimed in saying: “And to say it for yourself, and not to have to consult with anybody at this point.”

Meghan added: “Yeah. To be able to just make a choice on your own and to just be able to speak for yourself.”

The Duchess explained that, as a member of the Royal Family, she could not even speak over the phone with Oprah to turn down her interview offer in 2018 without the support of the communication team at the palace.

Meghan and Prince Harry officially stepped down as full-time working royals in late March 2020, three months after they first announced their intention to carve out a progressive new role within the Royal Family.

As agreed with the Queen and other senior royals in January 2020, Meghan and Harry retained their full royal titles but were asked to no longer use their HRH styles or the word ‘royal’ in their branding.

Moreover, the were also barred from carrying out royal engagements and represent the Crown.

The couple were given the go-ahead to live abroad and become financially independent, which paved the way to their deals with streaming giants Spotify and Netflix.

Last month, the Queen also announced her decision to strip Meghan and Harry of all their military and royal patronages.
