The Gatineau Fire Service said the battle to bring the blaze under control lasted nearly five hours.
An investigation has been transferred to the Gatineau Police Service following a fire that caused an estimated $550,000 in damage to the Saint-Gérard community centre in the Cheval Blanc neighbourhood on Wednesday.
The Gatineau Fire Service said the blaze at the former school was reported at about 11:15 a.m., but the battle to bring it under control lasted nearly five hours.
The two-storey building on Maloney Boulevard East was badly damaged by the rapidly spreading flames, but crews — 40 firefighters using 12 trucks and other equipment — were able to prevent damage to a secondary structure nearby.
No injuries were reported.
