EXCLUSIVE: The Tribeca Film Festival’s Midnight section lineup this year includes the intriguing Shapeless, the drama directed by Samantha Aldana in her debut feature. It is based on producer, star and co-screenwriter Kelly Murtagh’s personal struggles with an eating disorder. Check out the first look at the eerie trailer for the pic that bows at the fest next week.
Murtagh, who turned her experiences into a pic that was part of the 2020 Gotham Institute (formerly IFP) narrative lab last year, stars as Ivy, a struggling New Orleans lounge singer trapped in the hidden underworld of her eating disorder. Ivy must face her untreated bulimia — which at it worsens begins to degrade both her relationships and her singing voice — or risk becoming a monster. Bobby Gilchrist, Jamie Neumann, Marco Dapper, Erika Ashley, Gralen Bryant Banks and Zardis Nichols also star in the pic, which Murtagh co-wrote with Bryce Parsons-Twesten.
Murtagh, Gilchrist, Lizzie Guitreau, William Ramsey, R. Todd Campbell and Brian C. Miller Richard are producers.
The film from Murtagh and Gilchrest’s Water Meter Productions is having its premiere at 8 p.m. ET June 12 at Brooklyn Commons at MetroTech, and will be available to stream June 13 at 6 ET. XYZ Films is handling sales.
